Copal Resin
Copal is a sacred tree resin with deep roots in the spiritual traditions of Mexico and Mesoamerica. Its name comes from the Nahuatl word copalli, meaning “incense.” For centuries, Copal has been used by the Mexica, Maya, Zapotec, Mixtec, and other Indigenous peoples during ceremonies, prayers, offerings, healing practices, and purification rituals.
In Mexican tradition, Copal is often burned to cleanse homes, altars, temples, and ceremonial spaces. Its fragrant smoke is believed to carry prayers and offerings to the spiritual realm while helping to remove stagnant energy and prepare the space for sacred work.
Copal continues to hold an important place in Mexican spiritual and cultural traditions. It is commonly used during Día de los Muertos to honor and welcome the spirits of loved ones, as well as during house blessings, devotional practices, ancestral ceremonies, meditation, and ritual work.
When burned on charcoal, Copal releases a rich, resinous aroma that creates an uplifting and sacred atmosphere.
